The University of Porto is ranked 323rd in the QS World University Rankings® 2016/17. It was founded in 1911 and today has over 30,000 students, including around 3,300 international students. It is focused on research and development activities, which is evident in the work of centers such are the Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology, the Institute of Molecular Pathology and Immunology and the Research Institute of Computer Systems.

The University of Lisbon was ranked as 330th in the world in 2016. It is the largest university in Portugal, with over 47,000 students in 18 faculties. The main University of Lisbon was founded in 1911. However, the University as it is known today was formed in 2003 merging with the former Technical University of Lisbon.

Universidade NOVA de Lisboa is the third highest-ranked Portuguese university, which is 366th in the world. NOVA was founded in 1973 and has a student population of over 19,000 studying in specialized faculties with an emphasis on STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) and FAME (finance, accounting, management and economics) subjects.
